Get to Know our CEO
After a 17-year career at the largest credit union in the United States serving churches, schools, and other ministries, Kevin Bates was looking to continue serving his community by connecting with an organization making a difference in the lives of those in need. Introduced to Helping Hand House in March of 2015, he joined the board of directors shortly thereafter. He could not have known how much this connection would determine the next phase of his life.
Kevin was born and raised in Longview, WA before his family moved to Orange County, CA when he was in high school. He returned to the Pacific Northwest when he and his wife Lauri moved their five children to Puyallup in 2005. Since then, Kevin and his family have grown to love their hometown and gained a deeper understanding of what it means to be living in the Land of the Generous People.
Over the years, Kevin built a career as a sales, marketing, and relationship management professional serving primarily faith-based non-profit organizations. His unique background and knowledge in the areas of turnaround administration, budget and financial health assessment, and relational operations management prepared him to serve as an effective leader for an organization committed to affecting change in the lives of the people they served. An unforeseen job transition in 2014 led Kevin to reflect on what the next phase of his life was going to include.
Hoping to continue a career that combined his unique talents, experience and passion for serving families in need of life change led to the fortunate introduction to the team at Helping Hand House in March of 2015. He joined the board in April and stepped in as interim Executive Director in October. Working closely with the board and staff, Kevin helped transition the organization through a period of refinement and refocusing of efforts serving homeless families in the community. Taking over as the permanent CEO in May 2017, Kevin is excited about what the future holds for Helping Hand House – not just the organization itself, but the families they have the honor of serving as well.
Kevin and Lauri are active in their local church – Celebration Center in Puyallup, WA – and are passionate about both building healthy marriages and helping people understand and manage their finances well, releasing them to fund well-run non-profits and churches to expand the very important work of serving others. In his free time, Kevin is a movie fan, loves “collecting experiences instead of things” with his wife and kids, and golfs whenever he has the chance.
Please free to connect with Kevin at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to learn more about his story and Helping Hand House. He’s an avid coffee drinker and loves to share his passion for Helping Hand House and how we serve those in need in Puyallup and East Pierce County.
